Kennedy School Walk-About

McMenamin’s Kennedy School is an amazing old school building full of awesome.
They show movies, have restaurants, bars, and a soaking pool.
There’s other features there as well.
You can check them all out here if you’re interested in learning more.

There is also lots of art all over the building.
Angie and I walked all around just looking at it all and occasionally marveling at the dates on some of them.
I took pictures of some of the ones that caught my eye.
(Please don’t critique the photography itself today. I just wanted to capture the essence of the artwork.)

They have random doors and mantles mounted on the walls here and there.
Check out the details.

There were some beautiful mosaics.
Most of them had a hidden little feature.
This one had some pictures under the glass.

This one, made in 1933, says:
I love you little/ I love you big/ I love you like a little pig.
Love it.

This one is so pretty.
It looks like this one was written in 1935.  It says:
There was a young fellow named Hall/ He fell in the spring in the Fall/ It would be a sad thing/ If he died in the Spring/ but he didn’t, he died in the fall.

They had also framed some of the pictures from newspaper articles.

Tolkien’s birthday.

Random wall decoration above one of the bars I think.

The skylights had different kinds of mosaics.

DSC_0291
This is one of my favorites.
The yellow book on the lower right reads:
Kennedy Book Fair 1966.
Those book-worms are too cute!

DSC_0294
The story behind this piece eludes me.
There are four men in a boat (or maybe a shell?) in the ocean.
I feel like I should know what it is illustrating.
Do you?

DSC_0296
I find this one really interesting.
Between the girls’ hair and dress, they almost look like old ladies, but obviously aren’t.

DSC_0299
These are awesome.
They feature images representing 3 letters of the alphabet.
This one has a dragon, egg, and fairy.

DSC_0397
This one has ants, butterflies and a bee, and a cat.

DSC_0398
This one reminds me of Alice in Wonderland.
It has peonies, a rabbit, and a queen.

DSC_0306
The writing on the wall caught my eye, but the hall was too narrow for me to capture it all at once.
Kennedy School
It reads:
Inspiration, move me brightly. Light the song with sense and color, hold away despair. More time than this I will not ask.

DSC_0308
All along the walls right below the ceilings were these decorations.
At first I thought they were painted on.
DSC_0307
They’re actually mosaics.

DSC_0309
This was another one of my favorites.
Not because of he picture itself, but what was under it.
DSC_0312
Cool right?
It speaks to my crafter’s heart.
And my (not-so) inner nerd.

DSC_0313
I just think this one is funny.
The old men arguing about croquet is awesome.

DSC_0325
Finally, this fire pit sits in the middle of the courtyard in front of the building.

I don’t know exactly why I like it, but I really do.

Have a great weekend all.

Maternity Session ~My SIL at 28 weeks~

I had an awesome and much needed girl’s day with my sis-in-law yesterday.
We saw What to Expect When You’re Expecting.
We did some shopping and a little eating.
A LOT of talking.
(At least on my part. Once I get started, it’s hard to stop.)
And we had a little (way overdue) session.

We decided to see the movie and do the session at the Kennedy School
We walked around and checked out some of the cool and eclectic art around the school.
(More on that tomorrow.)

Every time we passed this gong, Ang would hit it.
First, she had to take a quick peek for others.

Then she hit it.
I admit, I jumped a little the first time.
Fun stuff.

02-DSC_0323

One of the fun parts of shooting with Angie is that she lets me loose creatively.
I decided to try out a new lens and I love the way it turned out.
I started with my most basic lens first though.

03-DSC_0328

Such a sassy lady sometimes. Lol.

04-DSC_0329

That smile is infectious though right?

05-DSC_0333

It never hurts to stop and smell the roses.
Or any other flower.

07-DSC_0336

The light was perfect for me to try out my Holga lens.
I love the effect it gives.
A lot of the shots ended up with a 70’s feel I think.
I like it.

08-DSC_0337

I love love this shot.

09-DSC_0339

10-DSC_0344

A classic Angie look.
Doesn’t she kinda look like she considering what kind of trouble to get into next?

12-DSC_0348

14-DSC_0352

Classic belly shot.
Another one of my favorites.

15-DSC_0351

Not the best shot technically, but I love the reflective feel.
Mamas-to-be spend a lot of time reflecting.
Life is going to seem completely different in a few short months.

16-DSC_0353

This was a just for fun shot.
I don’t think she was expecting me to actually take it.
I love it.

17-DSC_0354

18-DSC_0356

I think she looks a bit like the cat with the canary in mouth.
So cute.

19-DSC_0394

This is the final random shot.
I don’t think she even realized I was pointing at her.
This is reality.
No posing.
Simply checking her text messages.
Still, it’s a moment to remember.
I am so excited for this new little one to join our family.

*****

My cousin just had a new addition.
I am so sad that I won’t be able to meet the new angel for a while. (They live in California.)
But my thoughts are with her and her BEAUTIFUL family.
